The route today took us along Lake Shore Drive (State Route 5) through wine country and often very close to Lake Erie. We enjoyed wide, smooth bike lanes as this is also New York Bikeway 517. The skies were clear and the high today was only 77 F. There was a steady headwind for the first 60 miles - not bad but always there. Over the last 10 miles the wind came from the southwest, and we were happy to have a tailwind to finish the day. At times the roads were very busy but we felt comfortable using the bike lane.
There were a lot of rolling hills today. The climbs were short so after gaining speed on the downhill side we could coast about half way up many of the hills.
After a short stay in Pennsylvania on to a long tour of New York
Many beautiful views of the lake and vineyards
The bike route also follows the Seaway Trail in this part of New York. The old lighthouse at Barcelona NY in the background.
Shoreline at the hotel we are staying at tonight
We can see Buffalo from here across the lake!
