Day 5 - Akron to Warren, 47 miles

We were sad to say good-bye to Scott today. We had breakfast together and he helped get our gear together for the ride to Warren.  Scott also came through with another great route for today.  He is headed back to California, family, and work.

We were happy to have a shorter day today - we needed some additional rest.  The route had us riding for a mile through downtown Akron before getting on the Freedom Trail.  That trail led to Kent where we picked up the Portage Bike and Hike Trail.  About  half of the route was on bike trails today.  The rest of the way to Warren was a mix of busy roads (with nice shoulders, thank goodness) and quiet country roads. Some real nice rolling hills today.  On one descent we hit 40 mph - in Ohio !

Navigators Scott and Sherri planning our route through downtown Akron.  We went the opposite direction 🙂

The Kent dam and pool on the Cuyahoga River.  Built in 1836, restored in 1925.

The trail lead right to the dam observation deck. From there we had to carry the tandem up two flights of stairs to the bridge above!   Thankfully on the other side of the bridge there was a bike ramp.
